Matador

Heald’s multi-award-winning sliding bollard system, the Matador, is a patent-protected high-security system crash-tested to various PAS 68 and IWA standards. The Matador has revolutionised the perimeter security industry and has been recognised by numerous innovation awards for its various groundbreaking features.

The Matador system is a flexible shallow-mounted HVM Crash-Rated Bollard solution which is simple and easy to install and seamlessly integrates with Heald’s HVM Static Bollard Range.

Available in two crash resistance classes (see crash rating details below), the Matador has been designed to be installed at sites with congested underground services alleviating the need for expensive diversions and has proved its ability to protect underground utilities, transferring very little downforce during its IWA crash-test. Also, during crash-testing, the sliding bollard system arrested the test vehicle achieving a zero-penetration rating and continued to function following the impact with no repairs required providing reliable protection for both life and infrastructure.

The innovative design of the sliding bollards of the Matador offers excellent pedestrian permeability and because of their sliding motion, the moving bollards are always visible minimising the chance of accidental damage. The Matador also features a completely flat surface when installed as a recessed product, meaning there are no trip or trap hazards, making the system extremely safe for pedestrianised areas.

The system is available with a wide range of options as standard, including Electromechanical or Manual operation, is customisable to suit client preferences, and can be made to bespoke requirements by our talented engineering team to fit installation sites with the most challenging of constraints.

Each Matador can be installed in one of 3 different depth configurations which means that the Matador can be installed no matter the depth constraints or operational security requirements:

Surface Mounted

This is the configuration in which the Matador was crash-tested. It requires only the shallowest of excavations for a 150mm reinforced concrete slab, however, even this is not required if an existing slab of sufficient size and strength is already present in the installation location. This means the Matador is ideal for temporary events and can simply be bolted down to a suitable base and removed when necessary. Heald can provide matching ramps and handrails to complete the temporary installation.

Recessed

In this configuration the Steel Top Plate of the Matador has an extremely hardwearing anti-slip coating applied which is available in a wide range of RAL colours to help with the visual integration of the system with its surroundings.

Recessed with Architectural Paving System (APS)

Heald’s Architectural Paving System is a proprietary set of trays and retaining steelwork fixed above the Matador top plate which can be filled with any surfacing material (Granite, Asphalt, Concrete, Resin, etc) to create seamless integration with the architectural environment.

The unique, patented design of the Matador uses sliding bollards to create an opening in the secure line of a protected area for authorised vehicles to enter and exit.

This is a great safety benefit to pedestrians as the bollards remain in full view throughout their complete cycle of motion, unlike traditional rise-fall bollards which can seem to appear from nowhere.

Both Drive Options for the Matador’s dynamic bollards champion Heald’s commitment to sustainability:

The Electromechanical Matador

This is electrically operated requiring just one single phase 13A supply and can be up to 80% more efficient than hydraulic bollard systems.

There is also no requirement for hydraulic oil, eliminating the risk of spillages or environmental contamination.

An additional benefit is the elimination of hydraulic hoses which allows the roadside cabinet to be housed further away from the Matador without the need for long hydraulic hose runs which can be difficult to install and replace.

The roadside cabinet itself can also be smaller because the Matador does not require a bulky HPU, so less materials are required resulting in a smaller carbon footprint. This is also of benefit to the built environment as smaller cabinets are more easily concealed.

The Manually Operated Matador

This requires no power supply so is ideal for remote locations or for those areas where running electrical supplies would be prohibitive due to cost.

This is also cost-effective, efficient and an ideal way of installing high security physical protection measures whilst reducing initial project and running costs.

Heald design all their products to be long lasting and enable the easy replacement of serviceable components.

We offer support and maintenance packages to all customers to ensure that the consistently high levels of service and protection you expect can be maintained by our specialist team of engineers giving you peace of mind that your security investment is in good hands.
