Spitfires today flew in East Yorkshire, as part of a commemorative flight to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Thirteen of the vintage fighters, from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and private Spitfire owners, had earlier taken off from Humberside Airport.
They split into three groups to give as many people as possible the chance to once again see and hear these wonderful historic aircraft.
The first group flew over Humber Bridge, York, Linton on Ouse, Thirsk, Leeming, Teesside, Whitby, Scarborough, Bridlington, and Hull.
August 13, 1940, was the first day of Unternehmen Adlerangriff, the German bid to destroy the RAF in World War II, which was intended to lead to an invasion of Britain.
The German attacks inflicted significant damage and casualties but – thanks to the heroism of British pilots – did not make a significant impression on Fighter Command’s ability to defend British air space.
The Battle of Britain inspired then Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s most famous quote: “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
