As the 8th of March celebrates International Women’s Day, we want to highlight the integral role women play at Heald and within the manufacturing industry.
According to the World Manufacturing Foundation, the share of women employed in the manufacturing industry is roughly 30%. Likewise, according to the World Economic Forum, 33% is the share of women at junior level staff, 24% at mid-level staff, 15% at senior level staff, and 9% as CEOs across all industries.¹
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #EmbraceEquity. Focusing on gender equity, the #EmbraceEquity campaign aims to drive awareness towards the lack of true inclusion and the need for equitable action.
The women at Heald not only play a vital role in the business’s day-to-day operations but also in ensuring people across the world can feel safe against potential vehicle attack threats and safely go about their daily lives.
With approximately 35% of the Heald team made up of women, whether it be liaising with customers, preparing proposals, technical documentation or managing the outputs of the manufacturing team, our female colleagues are crucial to the company’s ongoing success.
Bolstering career opportunities
Working across various positions, our female team members specialise in management, administration, sales, technical, and operations. Furthermore, at Heald, we’re proud to support women undertaking post-graduate and apprenticeship training within the manufacturing industry.
Recently we spoke to Aimee Middleton-Frankton, undertaking a Business Sales Apprenticeship about her role at Heald: “Heald supports my apprenticeship on a day-to-day basis by pushing me to my potential. People are always willing to help me learn, even when they are busy. They truly want to see me succeed.
“My biggest achievement at Heald is how much I have developed my skills, particularly my communication skills.”
Likewise, Natasha McDermott who graduated from the University of Leicester with a degree in Geology with Geophysics undertook her Level 3 Advanced Sales Administrator Apprenticeship with us. She completed the training in March 2021 and was crowned winner at the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards in the Apprentice of the Year category.
Natasha now works as Technical Sales Advisor, has autonomy on projects at Heald, and is continuing to develop in her role to provide technical support for the sales and marketing teams.
Proud to support women in manufacturing
Driven by Heald’s Managing Director, Debbie Heald MBE, who received an MBE for her services to export and women in STEM, Debbie is passionate about showcasing the opportunities available to women in manufacturing. Taking pride in her contribution to local educational establishments, Debbie works alongside various organisations, including Hornsea School and Language College and Ron Dearing UTC.
Last year we were delighted to see Debbie awarded the Over 100 Hours Award for her volunteering contribution as part of the STEM Ambassador Programme.
Debbie commented on her support for International Women’s Day and Women in STEM: “The team of individuals I work with at Heald play an integral role in ensuring operations run smoothly and, more importantly, ensuring our customers and distribution partners receive the highest level of customer support.
“Helping to bolster female career opportunities within the manufacturing industry is a significant part of my role at Heald. I’m incredibly proud of the success we’ve had throughout the years, and I look forward to continuing to support the talent within the organisation and young women considering their career paths.“
