Sheffield City Council The Crucible

Sheffield City Council approached Heald to provide a temporary installation to secure The Crucible during the World Snooker Championships, which took place from 21st April until 7th May 2018.

Sheffield City Council had certain requirements which Heald needed to meet, such as the product needing to maintain pedestrian access, but also allow for controlled vehicle access and provide hostile vehicle mitigation methods. Not only this, but the product also needed to have a shallow foundation depth and look and be as high quality as possible to blend in with the public realm.

Due to a number of high profile attacks over recent years at entertainment events and festivals, it was important for the client that both competitors and visitors attending the event felt safe and secure throughout the four-week tournament.

The Result

Sheffield City Council opted for The Matador 4 with an additional static bollard to secure a wider opening. The Matador, which has the option to be installed mounted on the surface, was simply bolted to the pavement surrounding The Crucible, and then removed after the World Snooker Championships were complete. The Matador was supplied with silver stainless steel covers to aid with the integration of The Crucible, which was refurbished in 2007. The Matador continued to function successfully during its temporary install with no issues.
